How It Works
According to Section 1527B of the Michigan School Code, school districts must provide five (5) days of professional development for all professional staff. At Warren Woods, our plan is to provide professional staff with a menu of choices built from the Warren Woods long term professional development plan which has been adopted by the District Student Achievement Team (DSAT) and from staff requests. All choices included on the site calendar are approved andwill count toward staff members' five (5) required days or thirty (30) hours.
Staff members can choose to attend after school sessions and use the accumulated hours for release on January 18 and/or June 17 for a total of up to nine (9) hours.Staff members are required to attend professional development on September 2 and on each of the delayed start dates:September 23;November 4; January 14 and April 27.
Each building principal has a limited budget to approve conferences that s/he would like staff members to attend. Please speak to your building principal if you are interested in a conference outside the District or MISD.Keep in mind that conferences need to address your building SIP/NCA goals. We will consider requests for conferences outside of the District and MISD, but will pay only the fees for such conferences.Travel costs, meals and costs of accommodations will not be covered.Individuals requesting conferences that have these costs will need to pay them themselves if the conference is approved for attendance.
As long as the budget allows,we will continue to pay curriculum rate for up to an additional six (6)hours of professional development.
In order to qualify for professional development credit, choices must fall within one of the District approved areas. The areas are:
1.Brain/mind learning
2.District, State and Federal mandates
3.Content specific training
4.Assessment
5.Instructional technology
The Michigan Department of Education has also set criteria concerning what qualifies for professional development. Please see the attached document which identifies requirements set by the State. The questions identified at the top of the chart are critical for approval of professional development. The administrators approving the requests must be able to answer, “yes,” to all questions in order for the request to be counted as professional development.
